Thank you

Thank you to each and every one of you for taking time to read my ridiculous stories.

You are all amazing and I can't thank you enough.

I'm worldwide and I still can't grasp the idea.

I'm amazed my words have reached so far and I can't wait to see what the future brings.

I should know better than to use the guest restrooms

Nothing quite as awesome as walking into the restrooms and seeing a heavy set young lady bent at the waist with her head resting on the sink counter appearing to be passed out. My interest piqued and of course would check on her once I'd gone pee because my bladder would not wait. I went to my stall and handled my business to the accompanying sound of her suddenly puking in the sink and running water. LOVELY! The very same sink area I'll be needing to wash my hands momentarily, can't wait! As I exit the stall and head to the sink, I literally take a deep breath and hold it like I'm about to free dive in Hawaii because the last thing I'd like to experience is the scent of puke along with the acoustics. I quickly turn on the water, soap up my hands and rinse so I don't begin to turn shades of blue resembling Violet Beauregarde.

The young lady looks up at me (face essentially IN the sink) smiles and says with slurred words, "Ignore me, I'm sorry." Half of me wanted to say "No problem there!" and run out with dripping wet hands. But the customer service in me said, "It's okay, don't worry about it. Are you okay?" What the hell is wrong with me?! Why did I ask if she was okay? Because I'm a nice person that's always concerned with other people's welfare damn it! Fortunately she didn't see that as an opening for conversation, though I'm not so sure she could have even carried on a conversation at that point if she'd tried. Unfortunately for her, she began hurling again and I quickly retreated to the paper towels, dried my hands, and made my way back to my office. Of course I get a guest about an hour later telling me that the bathroom "needs attention because someone was sick in the sink" so I called to have it cleaned. Have I mentioned I love my EVS team?

At least it wasn't a homeless person bathing in the sink again, that's just as awkward and smelly.

Graveyards never fail to disappoint me. There's always a story to tell.

Reflections

Wow, I've had this blog for 7 years. Yes, there have been stretches of time where I haven't been active. I've gone years without posting however the stories continue to build up in my head, and the stupidity never ceases to amaze me on a regular basis. I've been in the hospitality business since 2006 (that's 12 years!) and holy shit have I seen some things. Looking back and reading some of my previous posts had me laughing and shaking my head all over again. I've worked at all kinds of properties. Four Diamond, independent, extended stay, casino/hotel, world famous or completely unknown and as different as they all may be, they are also exactly alike in so many ways.

In 2016 I left the Las Vegas strip hotel I had been with for 4 years, and ended up in the downtown area also known as Fremont Street. Anyone that's been to Fremont knows that it's a totally different experience from being on the strip. This is "old town" this is where Vegas began, this is the original Las Vegas. Of course time has taken it's toll on the originals like The Mint, The Pioneer Club, Glitter Gulch, and The Las Vegas Club. All of which no longer exist. In their place stands home of the biggest tv screens in the country (if not the world I think but I could be wrong). A section comprising one fiftieth of the total canopy equals the size of the world’s current largest electric sign. Multiple permanent stages for nightly band performances, and of course SLOTZILLA the zip line experience.

Walking through the Fremont area, you will encounter any and every kind of person you could imagine. Being ranked #18 on the list of top 100 things to do in Vegas, The Fremont Street Experience draws an enormous crowd. The whole stretch of casinos and shops is packed with people observing the numerous street performers and artists there hoping to make some extra money, or shopping at the little carts with typical "vegas" merchandise. Now as you may recall, this is downtown so along with the thousands of tourists that flow through the area each day, we have a huge population of homeless and transient people that make their way through the crowds as well. Not to mention that the Las Vegas Metropolitan jail is also downtown (literally a block down from my hotel) and I'm also right next to the Greyhound bus station so you can imagine the colorful cast of characters I get walking through my lobby nightly. We, the front desk, have become pretty immune to the majority of disturbances that erupt on a near nightly basis. But there will always be that one person or experience that sticks out in our minds (like the guy that left his cat in the room for days essentially abandoning it, or the man that told me he was the devil and he was taking me to hell with him. I swear, I wish I was joking).

Sadly, I've realized that no matter what hotel you work in you're going to have the same experiences, and same annoying questions and problems. Twelve years later and I've evolved into an even more sarcastic version of myself and I continually have to remind myself to keep the cynicism in check or risk offending the wrong person and potentially losing my job. Then again I seem to be surrounded by a bunch of immature, gossipy people that couldn't keep a secret if their life depended on it so it's always best to maintain a tight lip. In my current situation I've found that although the graveyard shift hours SUCK, it's so much more peaceful and less stressful. No one around but the manager and the agent out front while I answer phones, do my paperwork, and run the night audit. Some days I miss having a shift with normal hours. But then I remember that wold mean working with other people and being caught up in the middle of the drama which I'd much rather avoid all together. So cheers to my other graveyard workers/night owls/day sleepers.

Sorry roomie!

I had some friends visiting Vegas and staying in my hotel. After my shift ended, I ran up to the room to go visit with them and catch up. On my way, I ran across this.

Apparently in Vegas, we don't do a sock on the door to signal to a roommate that there's some "company" in the room and to not enter. You would think that in an age where we are all technologically and socially connected to everyone else, that a text would suffice. But I guess this particular guy felt he was going to start a new tend, and change the typical sock to a string of Mardi Gras beads to signify the universal symbol for "I'm getting busy! Do not interrupt!"

Ahh, Vegas you keep me entertained.

MORE conversations with guests

Guest 1: Can I get a room with a balcony?

Me: Sir, did you happen to see the building before you came in?
(Just a refresher for those of you who may not have seen it in a while)

Guest 1: Oh, yeah. So there aren't any with balconies?

SMH.

Me: And Ms. Smith, are there any other guests in the room that may need access to a key?

Guest 2: Can I get two keys?

Me: Yes you may, but are there any other guests staying in the room with you?

Guest 2: No. Just me and my husband.

Me: (mental facepalm) So yes, there is another person in the room with you. May I have his name please so I can add him to your reservation?

Guest 2: No, it's just me and my husband in the room.

I really didn't know how to respond to this. I basically skipped the rest and just went straight to handing over the keys and giving directions to the elevator which I am sure were too complex for her and got her lost.

I wish there was a way to make people think before they ask questions.

Honest to God, these are the kind of questions I get asked regularly at work.

Do you work here?
While walking out of the EMPLOYEES ONLY door, dressed head to toe in a suit complete with a name tag, carrying a money bag and bank keys in my hand. No sir, I do not. Can you point me to the roulette table?
Do you know what time check out is?
I'm standing at the front desk and just finished checking in another guest. No Sir, I do not know what time check out is. I only work the front desk.

Is this the Mandalay Bay?
Yes, this is absolutely Mandalay Bay. Those giant decals on the glass doors you just walked through that say LUXOR are just to throw off the people with out money that aren't going to gamble. Oh, and the fact that it looks like a giant PYRAMID on the outside is just a facade.

Because these two look so much alike, right?

You live out here right?
No sir. I live by the beach in southern CA. I commute each day because I just LOVE my job here. It's a little rough some days, but my frequent flyer miles are really racking up.

Please, I cannot stress this enough, think and observe before you ask questions!!!

Pay attention class!

In the 7, almost 8 years I have worked in hotels there are so many experiences that I've had which if shared, I'm sure you would all call me a liar (like when just the other week a 60+ year old man came walking through the lobby of my 4400 room hotel and casino naked as a jaybird and stopped at the front desk because he was locked out and needed a key to his room. My question was how do you get locked out of your hotel room butt naked?!). But still the stories I share are nothing but the truth and in all honesty, I shake my head at some of the things I am witness to, and the things I see because believe it or not they are reality.

I live and work in a town who's reputation is anything but wholesome. Las Vegas to most, Sin City to some, and home to me, has always been known as the home of sex, skin, gambling, alcohol, drugs, prostitution, and pretty much anything illegal. In recent years it has become the choice location for those celebrating their final milestone as a young adult and letting everyone know "It's my 21st birthday!!!!" or those seeking a weekend of debauchery and shenanigans to conclude their last outing as a single person before committing themselves to "the one". Then there are always those who run out to the desert to exchange vows in a 10 minute ceremony with The King as the officiant.

So for those of you thinking of heading out to the city of flashing lights and dinging machines, these are a few things to keep in mind once you reach your hotel:

1. If you reach your hotel hours after check in has begun, do not expect to get the exact room you wanted. If you arrive around 1am and you ask the clerk for a room on the highest floor possible, facing the strip, be prepared to get something on the bottom 4 floors facing the parking structure because by that time of night, that's pretty much all that's left. WORD TO THE WISE: if you want a specific type of room with a specific view, call ahead of time on your date of arrival and pre-register your room. You're more likely to get what you were hoping for.

2. I know most people think it couldn't hurt to ask for a free upgrade, but in fact it does. If you wanted a bigger better room, then you should have booked and paid for it like everyone else. Don't get all upset and angry and badger to clerk into upgrading the room for you for free because if you do it to me, the answer is no. We (the front desk clerks) don't care if it's your birthday/anniversary/honeymoon/first visit/bachelorette/bachelor party. There are plenty of people here for the same exact reason and we can't upgrade you all. You're not special just because it's your birthday. Sorry.

3. Please know the details of your reservation prior to arrival. Most importantly WHAT NAME IS ON THE RESERVATION!!! I can't tell you how frustrating it is for us clerks when you have no idea what name the reservation is under because that means we get to search every person's name in your party and pray that the agent that booked it spelled it correctly. And when you have five rooms and 20 people in the party, this takes a huge amount of time. And if this scenario does in fact occur, do not become impatient and attempt to rush the clerk because that just wont happen. The more rushed you are, the more efficient we become (translation: we go slower). Along the same lines, please make sure the person who is the main name on the reservation is present and in front of the clerk when attempting to check in. Every hotel I have ever worked at requires that person to be present. This is nothing new. This has been an industry wide policy for many many years now folks. Get with the program!!!

4. Please learn the difference:

adjacent - lying near, close, or contiguous
connected - joined or fastened together
adjoined - neighboring; contiguous

5. Don't get upset when you are told there are additional fees for things like a fridge in the room, rollaway beds, or a resort fee so you can park for free, make calls from the room, use the pool and gym, and have internet available to you. I don't understand why it's so difficult to understand that extra things = extra cost. Nothing in life is free folks.

Thank you for reading and stay tuned for more rants, tips, and ridiculous stories from the Las Vegas hotel world.

It's been a while

So it's been a while since sharing my adventures in hospitality. I've been thinking lately that I need to get back on it and start writing some more. If not for the simple pleasure of writing, for the entertainment and release of it all.

So bear with me for a few days while I get my thoughts compiled and jump back on the blogging wagon.

Thank you to my followers!

Listen when others speak

"May I please see your photo identification?"
Guest shoves confirmation paper across the counter at me.
"Thank you, but I still need to see your photo identification."
Guest hands me a credit card.
"Thank you, I will be needing this a well as YOUR PHOTO IDENTIFICATION PLEASE."
Guest looks at me utterly puzzled.
I swear folks, please, if you comprehend English, please listen when others speak. It's one of the most annoying things in the world to have to repeat yourself and not reach across the country and slap you for being stupid.
Thank you.

It's a tough life for a pimp, the saga of 255

For those of you who may not know, I am back at my original hotel here in Las Vegas. I tried out Caesars Palace for about a month, but it was not quite what I had expected it to be. Though I made some really cool friends there, learned a lot, and had fun, it just didn't work out. So I was able to return back to my previous hotel since they hadn't replaced me yet.

Upon my return I met a guy that had been staying here for a few weeks. From the beginning, his whole appearance and demeanor made me laugh. For the longest time I couldn't think of who he looked like, but it totally reminded me of someone and it made me laugh. The guy had a silver and diamond grill that he popped in and out whenever the mood suited him. He had long hair, straightened (he was black) that went past his shoulders, he wore sunglasses all the time, even at night, and had bling hanging from every extremity of his body. I swear, if I could have taken a picture of this guy without being completely obvious, I would have. The first time I met the guy he started trying to flash his ridiculous smile at me, he must have thought it would impress me that he wasted his money on his dental accessories instead of on the 1 year old little boy he had in tow. Then finally it hit me! I figured out who the guy reminded me of!!!!! Do you remember the movie from the 90's that Eddy Murphy was in where he played a vampire? Vampire in Brooklyn? Ring any bells? Okay, does this help at all?

Just imagine this picture of Eddie Murphy from the movie, with a shade lighter skin, straightened hair, a silver set of teeth, and a whole lot of "ice" hanging from the neck. ears, and wrists. No joke, this was the guy! So to humor myself, in my head I kept calling him "Eddie" even though everyone here called him "255" because that was the room he was in with his "girl" and his brother. Eddie wasn't shy about telling us all about how he paid to fly his brother out here to go to school, and paid for all of his school, and had all of this money. And yes, he had money, but it wasn't his.

Now when I say "girl" I mean the chick he referred to as his girlfriend, but we all new she was a ho, and he was her pimp. Seen it a million times since working here. I can pick them out of a group in a second, sadly enough. They would typically pay for a week at a time, and everything was fine. But then there was trouble in paradise. They started not paying on time, and they were days late on paying. We gave them a chance to catch up, and get back on track, but Eddie kept dodging us and wouldn't come pay. Finally it got to a point where my boss and I felt that enough was enough and we were being taken advantage of, so I sent my front desk girls to lock them out of the room. Lock out meaning we basically wont allow you any further access to your room and belongings until we receive payment. The girls came back down (there were two because we had a girl in training), and I asked them if there were still belongings in the room or not. It's happened before that people will owe us money, and will pick up and leave in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning, and leave us hanging. So I needed to know if they had skipped out on us, or if they were actually still in the room. The girls weren't sure and said they heard the tv was on, but they didn't actually look around the room. No one had answered the door when they knocked, so they just locked the room. I went upstairs to look for myself. Knocked on the door, "FRONT DESK!" no answer. Knocked again, "FRONT DESK!" again no answer. So I opened up the door, saw some food in the kitchenette, and pampers on the counter, and a baby sitting upright on the couch watching tv by himself. Wait, WHAT?! THERE'S A 1 YEAR OLD SITTING ALONE ON THE COUCH IN THE LIVING ROOM!!!! I looked around and there was no adult in sight, the bedroom doors were closed (255 is a 2 bedroom unit, almost like a small 2 bedroom apartment), and no one was answering me when I called out! I hesitantly closed the door and litterally flew back downstairs. My stomach was turning at this point, and I seriously felt sick. I was worried for this poor child's safety. He could easliy roll off the couch and hit his head on the table, or the floor, he could roll onto one of the pillows and suffocate, he could choke on something and die! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?! The three of us were so upset I called LVMPD (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department) and had them come out to investigate and hopefully take the child into protective custody until an adult shows up.

One by one the officers show up, three female, and one male officer. The first female and the male officer were the first to arrive, and after filling them in on the situation we went to the room. After a few knocks that would have woken a hibernating bear, we could hear the baby crying in the room, and a few minutes later the door finally opened, and it was the girl. First words out of the officer's mouth, "Oh, I'm sorry. Did we wake you?" I litterally had to turn around and giggle to myself. The more cops I come into contact with while at work, the more I am realizing how INCREDIBLY sarcastic they all are. They made their way into the room, and I left them to do what they do. then the other two cops show up, and about 45 minutes later, they all come down and tell me that they will be forwarding this to CPS, and they will be following up on the welfare of the child because this is not an appropriate place for a child to be living. Okay, well I felt better knowing that the child wasn't completely alone, but still bothered by the fact that she was sleeping with the door closed in the bedroom and left the child all by himself.

The next day Eddie pulled me aside and talked to me about their bill. Saying he had the money the other day, but went to the casino to "double it" but ended up losing it all. Said he had $3,000 in his pocket last week, and lost it all at the casino. Said that his girl went "to work" and got paid the day before, but he only had enough to pay part of the bill because he still needed to go get food and diapers for the baby. Can anyone say GAMBLING PROBLEM? Tell me why I had to lecture a grown ass man on taking care of his responsibilities? Then he started complaining because the cops were called on them, and I told him that I called because I was concerned for the safety of the child, not to get anyone in trouble. And he was upset because I called the cops instead of going through the bedrooms to see if someone else was there. Umm, hello?! I'm also concerned for my own safety! I'm not going to go wondering through someone's room and fling open doors that I have no idea what's going on on the other side of. Who knows what I might walk into and I was not in any mood to have a knife or gun or who knows what pulled on me. Sorry, I'm a little smarter than that, and obviously he is not. So eventually he pays a portion of the outstanding balance, and life goes on like normal, or so we thought.

The saga continues.

Not even a week passes by and the drama resumes. The phone rang at the front desk, and my clerk answered it. It was Eddie. He was kind of in a panic, and told her that if anyone came looking for him, or asking what room he was in, that we were supposed to tell them that he had changed rooms. So Kiki put him as a "Non-Registered Guest" essentially making him non-existant to the public. Just as she was hanging up with him, his "girl" came to the desk and was asking for a key to the room. Now most anyone who has stayed in a hotel knows that the hotel wont just give a key to anyone. You need to be registered to the room in order to have any acess to keys. She was not on the reservation. The room was registered to Eddie, and his brother. So, as per hotel policy, Kiki refused her access. The girl was really upset and said that she knew he was in the room, and that we knew she was with him and that she had been staying here for over a month with him. Again Kiki refused and explained the policy to her. She stormed off and came back a few minutes later with two other bimbos, and guy and they set up camp in the lobby. They said that they were waiting for the cops to show up because the girl wanted to get her son and her things and Eddie wouldn't give it to her. I was on my way back down the hall when the two bimbos started getting crazy with Kiki and Kiki had to call the cops on them because they were getting out of control. The second the cops were mentiond, the guy that was sitting with them got up and said "I ain't with these bitches" and hauled ass out the door. They started cussing up a storm and getting exceptionally loud. They would have given the worst of sailors or truckers a run for their money. I tried to step in and diffuse the situation until the officers arrived, but they continued to act like idiots (maybe they weren't acting, who knows). Eventually the officer came in, both sides of the story were told, and the bimbos were forced to wait outside in the cold while the officer when up to the room with the girl to retrieve her child and belongings. Not long after going upstairs, they were on their way out with her suitcase and baby and she was on her marry little way. The cop came back and started asking questions, and just as we suspected, he also suspected it was a pimp-n-ho opperation. About 15 minutes after all of the action had settled down, Eddie came down to the lobby with his brother and sunglasses in place, and kept pacing back and forth. He asked if my General Manager was here, and Kiki said that I was the manager that was there. He of course didn't want to talk to me so he went back to his room.

A few days later, he called down repeatedly all day long trying to get a hold of my General Manager, to get her to go talk to him in his room. Why he didn't want to come down and talk to her, we wouldn't find out until later. Finally she decided to go because she wanted to find out what the story was. Well, Eddie proceeds to tell my boss that the night she came to get her baby, the guy she was with was her new pimp that she had been working for for months and all of the money that she had been giving Eddie to pay for everything was coming from the new pimp! (jaw drops!) She and the baby had aparantly ran off with Mr. New Pimp to Texas and she was now calling and texting Eddie telling him how sorry she was, and how badly she wanted to come home because she was so unhappy with Mr. NP. Through texts and calls, Eddie ended up talking with the new pimp, and he told Eddie how he wasn't going to let go of his girl, how she was his property now. How she was going to do what he says and when, and he took away her cell so she couldn't call or text Eddie anymore (picking jaw up off of the floor).

So basically, Eddie and his brother were up a creek without a paddle. They were broke, with no income, no girls, no job, and they owed us over $500. We knew they were going to bail on us. The next day, they had all of their stuff packed up and were on their way out. We stood at the camera monitor and watched Eddie selling some stuff (most likely his Rolex, or other extravagant bling in the stairwells) just to get some cash. His brother had already said that he was going to stay at a homeless shelter because he was already enrolled in his classes and couldn't leave. So we watched as he made his cash, and left his brother in the bottom of the stairs by himself to keep an eye on their bags. Eventually, they gathered up what they had, and left the building.

In a way I felt bad for Eddie, but then I stopped feeling bad. He made choices in his life that put him in this position. Most people think that being a pimp is awesome. Lots of girls, lots of money, nice cars, lots of bling, and all of the finer things in life. But after encountering this particular pimp, it made me realize that it's a tough life for a pimp. It's not all "bitches n bling". No one has it easy in life, apparantly even pimps.

Hello, Good-Bye, Tigers, and Death

Back in June when I was offered a position with a small hotel in Las Vegas, I never imagined I would be where I am today. In a matter of four months my life has completely turned itself around. I have found myself in the best situation I have been in, in a number of years. I have moved into my own place, my car is almost paid off, I have a new dog, Frankie, who I love more than I could possibly describe, and now I have left my position at the small hotel for the best opportunity anyone could hope for. I accepted, and have just begun training for the position of Front Desk Supervisor at a world famous hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Unfortunately, I will not be able to divulge the name of the hotel of course, however Tigers love the bathrooms in our suites and the closets are so large you might just leave your baby in one (HINT HINT!!!!!!!).

As excited as I am to begin this new journey of mine, I leave my previous employer completely traumatized, and with a heavy heart. As I am sure some of you who are Facebook friends with me read of my discovery on my final day of employment. And still, days later it is difficult for me to still comprehend that we found a dead body in one of our rooms. Though no foul play was suspected, and it appears as though John had passed in his sleep, it is still tough to stomach. No words can describe the feeling I had that day, especially since his sister had called about a week and a half prior to the discovery frantically searching for her brother since they had not been able to locate or contact him. Yes, I just said a week and a half earlier (it had been about two weeks since John had last been seen when his body was discovered).

As heavy as my last day with Meg and the gang was, there were a lot of good times and good people there. I'm going to miss the fun we had making fun of the stupid and idiotic things people did there. But mostly I'm greatful for the indroduction to Vegas. I don't think anywhere else in the first week I could have seen FOUR transgender women in one room, and one of them out at the pool complete with a women's bathing suit. In that same week there were also pimps and hos galore (but then again that was every day, it is Vegas after all), some sort of drug connection shut down, and a five month pregnant woman who walked and acted as though she was about ready to give birth at any moment. Some of the things we found in rooms could only make you laugh or shake your head in disgust. Like housekeepers finding used neon pink "adult toys," ice cubes shaped like a man's privates, feminine cleansing products, needles (and I don't mean for shooting insulin), hooker shoes, plasma tvs, underwear (actually pretty common unfortunately), bullets, male enhancement items, the list goes on and on folks.

So I wave good bye to the pimps and hos, I say farewell to the druggies, and leave the drunk guy passed out in the hallway floor by room 322 as I move on to bigger and better things. Now I get to deal with a higher class of hookers and pimps! Oh yay! I get to hear about how the sheet on the bed was wrinkled so they want a free stay. Lint on the carpet deserves a complementary dinner at the steakhouse (for their family of 12). How they thought they booked "The Hangover Suite" but only got one bed. They lost all of their money at the casino and can't pay for their room. Oh the joys of working a large scale hotel with the drunks and the party animals. As entertaining as my four months with my last hotel was, this is bound to have an entertainment value that far outweighs any other. Las Vegas is definitely a city like no other, and though I do love and miss my California VERY MUCH, Vegas is really growing on me and I think this move was the most difficult, but best thing I ever could have done for myself.

If any of you are ever in Vegas, let me know! I'm not saying you will get a free room or that I can "hook you up" but it would be awesome to see some familiar faces again from back home.

What would you do?

If you walked into the public bathroom at your work, and ran across this, what would you do? I mean really cause I'm confused. Call the cops? Throw it away? Hang on to it?

The things people forget

Now I don't know about everyone else, but before I leave I make sure I have all my things. Especially things like underwear. Though this is very common, its still nasty and funny at the same time. Lets just hope these weren't dude's only pair.

She MUST have been a blonde

Phone rings at the front desk, I answer:

"It's a great day at Crestwood Suites, this is Tara. How may I assist you?"

Umm, we are trying to find your hotel, and we can't find it.

Okay, well we are on the corner of South Las Vegas Blvd, and Warm Spring Rd. Where are you at currently?

Umm, we are going to turn onto Las Vegas Blvd. I think we are by Mandalay Bay.

(you think? Mandalay is kind of hard to miss) Okay, well you are going to turn south (not knowing which direction they were facing, could have been right or left), and when you get to Warm Springs Rd, we will be on the Left hand side.

Umm, it doesn't go south, it goes left or right.

. . . . . . . . . . . (long pause) Okay then you are going to turn away from Mandalay Bay, and just go straight until you see Warm Springs Rd.

Okay, thanks.

Absolutely! We will see you shortly. Good bye

Umm, when did north and south, east and west become obsolete? When did everything become left and right, up and down? Did I miss the memo?

Saturday, October 8, 2011

I downloaded my blog onto my phone so that I can blog on the spot and show you the things I see everyday at work. Lets hope this picture posts okay.

Now I know this is Vegas and all, but really, you've been drinking all night, and all day at least since 9am when I first saw you in my lobby, I think its time to give it a reast for a bit and sober up. Yes folks you see that right. Thats a paper bag with an alcoholic beverage in it, and its 11:36am.

Conversatoins with guests: Holiday Edition!

Phone rings, I answer:

Thank you for Calling the Eden Roc Inn & Suites. This is Tara, how may I assist you?

What's the name of this place?

(In a louder volume, thinking maybe they just couldn't hear very well) The Eden Roc Inn & Suites.

Oh, okay. It's the right place. Umm, can I talk to Mr. Luis.

Okay, (checks the computer for a guest by that name) I'm sorry I don't have anyone by that name here. Is that his last name?

No it's his name.

Okay, well what is his last name?

I don't know, his name is Luis.

Okay, well without a last name, I can't find who you are looking for.

Well, he works there, the guy at the desk.

I don't have anyone that works here named Luis, not even anything close to Luis.

Oh, well I want to make a reservation but I was to talk to him. He's a mexican guy, with brown hair. he speaks spanish.

Okay well that describes all but 2 guys that work at the desk.

Oh, but I need to talk to him. He's the guy that works at the desk.

Well "Luis" doesn't work here. And I am the only girl that works in the front office, so I don't really know who you are looking for.

Well can you tell me all of the names of the people that work there, maybe I will remember his name.

(Didn't she just say his name was Luis?!) I'm sorry ma'am, I can't give the names of all of our employees to you. You can call back later and see if you get a hold of who you are looking for.

Okay, well can you tell me when he's going to be there?

Ma'am, I don't know who you are looking for so how can I tell you when he will be here?

But I need to talk to him!

Ma'am, I'm sorry, I can help you make the reservation if you would like.

No, I need Luis.

Then I am sorry, I can't help you.

Okay, well I will call back later for him.

Okay, have a great day.

Serisouly, I'm not kidding, this is how my Independence Day has been since 7am. Nothing but interaction like this, both on the phone and in person. Its been a rough rough day, and I still have 2 hours left.

Three strikes!!!

So an elderly gentleman drives up to my hotel, gets out of the car, and comes into the lobby. He was searching for a fellow traveler of his and wasn't sure if this was the correct hotel. He gave me his friend's name, I located him in the computer and offered to call the room for him. Of course, his friend was not in the room. So the gentleman asks if he can leave a message for his friend. I immediately grab a pen and paper for him to write his message, place it in front of him, and attempt to had the pen to him, and say "Here is a pen and paper for you to write your message sir." The man looks at me (or at least I think he was looking at me) and says, "Oh hunny I'm legally blind. I can't write it. Will you write it down for me?" Completely dumbfounded, I take down the information he gives me, he thanks me, and turns toward the door to leave. I mean, turned and FELT for the door, and hopped back in the car, and drove off.

Please go back and re-read that first paragraph and see if you catch on to why I was dumbfounded.

Yes, that's right, he's legally blind, and DROVE HIS CAR HERE AND DROVE AWAY!!!!!

Beware folks, this man has three strikes when it comes to driving
1. he's legally blind
2. he's old (and I mean old, like got to be in his late 70's)
3. he's a tourist from Indiana

Sorry sir, there's a three strikes law in California, please hand over your driver's license and refrain from operating any motorized vehicle except maybe a hoveround/scooter type mode of transportation that is not really considered a lethal weapon.

I mean really! I swear it felt like the scene in the beginning of House Party 3 when the group of blind guys get in the VW Bug, one sits in the seat on the hood of the car, buckles his safety belt, and sits there with his walking stick out hitting crap with it as they drive off! (I know this because sadly I watched House Party 3 yesterday! Don't judge!)

But truthfully, in all honesty, I worry for his safety and the safety of the other thousands of drivers on the road, and pedestrians on the sidewalks in the city of Anaheim tonight! People like this man are how people get run over, or hit with cars, or the wrong pedal gets pushed and people end up pinned between cars or litterally run down at a Farmer's Market. Why doesn't his family care enough to tell him "Grand-dad, its just not safe for you to be driving anymore!"

Remind me not to go to Indiana anytime soon if they still allow people like this man to drive.

Conversations with the public continued

Sorry, it was a long day and I forgot to post this one with the others.

Guest calls me from their room on the far side of the property, opposite the lobby:
  • GUEST: Hi, I'm trying to connect to the internet, and its not working.
    • ME: Well, it is not guaranteed to reach to your room. The wi-fi is ONLY guaranteed in public areas, like in the lobby and out by the pool.
  • Well I see the Anabella Hotel, and the Best Western Hotel, is that you?
    • No ma'am, you are staying at the Eden Roc Inn & Suites.
  • Oh, so does that mean that I don't get internet in my room?
I was just dumbfounded. I really was.

Conversations with the public

Typically, as individuals, people are pretty smart. However, it's the few that I replay my conversations with below, that make me think otherwise. These are just a few that actually stand out to me.
  • GUEST: What time is check-in?
    • ME: Check-in begins at 3:00, and you are welcome to check-in anytime after that.
  • Can I get an early check in?
    • An early check in is a request. If we have the rooms available, then we would be glad to check you in prior to our 3pm check-in time.
  • Oh, so it's not guaranteed?
    • No, as I just explained to you, it is a request and is never guaranteed.
  • Even though I booked my room ahead of time?
    • Yes, even though you booked your room ahead of time. 95% or more of our guests also booked their rooms ahead of time.
  • Oh, but its paid for already!
    • Yes, as are all of the other guests that booked their rooms through a third party company JUST like you did.
  • Well, we are going to be arriving around 8:00 in the morning and wanted to check-in before we go to Disneyland.
    • Ma'am, our check-OUT time isn't until noon, so I am pretty sure that your room will still be occupied by the previous guest when you arrive, and our housekeepers will not arrive until 9:00am and they clean the rooms according to when guests check-out.
  • Okay, so can I have an early check-in?

  • Do you have another room we can move to?
    • Is there something wrong  with the room you are in right now?
  • Well, the people in the room next to us are banging on the walls and it sounds like they are moving furniture around or something. But they are definitely banging on the walls and I have a baby that's trying to sleep!
    • They are banging on the walls?
  • Yes, it just started a few minutes ago and it is very loud.
    • Oh (looking at the clock, realizing what time it was), ma'am, those are the fireworks over at Disneyland. They started at 9:25pm.
  • Oh, they have fireworks over there?
    • Yes ma'am, every night at 9:25pm during the holidays, spring break and summer, and only on weekends in between peak times. It's Friday night and it's 9:32pm, and the hotel is directly across the street from the theme parks. If you go out onto the walk way in front of your room, and look to the North, you should see some of the show.
  • Oh, (speaking to husband) it's the fireworks over at  Disneyland. They do it every night at this time. (speaking to me) So, I guess you can't ask them to knock it off so my baby can sleep can you?
    • I could, but I don't think they would grant your request.
  • The housekeepers never came to clean my room today.
    • Oh, my appologies! What was your room number?
  • 204
    • Ma'am, our housekeeper has down that you had a do not disturb sign on your door.
  • Yeah, we put it on there this morning because we didn't want anyone in the room.
    • Well, if you have the do not disturb sign on the door, the housekeepers will not enter your room. That's what the signs are for. But if you want service in your room, then I suggest you refrain from putting the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door.
  • Well, don't they know I want my room cleaned everyday?
    • Ma'am if the sign on the door says DO NOT DISTURB, they will not disturb you, even for cleaning service. The sign indicates that you do not want service.
  • But I do want service, I want them to clean my room.
    • But you put the sign on the door because you didn't want anyone in the room?
  • Yes.
    • So you don't want anyone in the room, but you want them to clean the room?
  • Yes.
    • Ma'am, how are they going to enter and clean the room if you don't want anyone in the room?

  • Where do I get the shuttle to Disneyland?
    • I'm sorry, but we do not provide any shuttle service to the theme parks.
  • Well then how do we get there?
    • You can walk, it only takes about 10 minutes.
  • Ugh, WALK?!
    • Yes sir, walk. I have walking directions to get you there as quick as possible.
  • I don't want to walk there, that's too far to walk.
    • Well sir, you're going to be walking all day in the theme parks.
  • Well, I don't want to walk, so what are my other options?
    • Well, you can drive your car to the parking structure, and pay $15 for parking, but by the time you get over there, walk from the car to the tram, and then from the tram to the gate, its well over the 10 minutes it would take to walk.
  • OR?
    • OR, you can pay for a taxi to take you, or catch the Anaheim Resort Transit System but you have to pay for that as well and that ALSO takes longer than the 10 minutes it would take to walk.
  • Well I don't want to pay for it either.
    • Sir, if you don't want to pay to get to the parks, then you will have to walk. That is the only free form of transportation. If you don't want to walk, then you do have other options that include some sort of fee. So the choice is yours.
  • We picked this hotel because it said it was close to Disneyland, 10 minutes to walk is NOT close to Disneyland.
    • Sir, how much closer did you expect it to be? The back of Paradise Pier in California Adventure is LITTERALLY across the street from the hotel. You can see it from some of our rooms. You can view the firework show at night from the hotel. Any closer and you would be staying at one of the Disney Hotels. How much closer than a 10 minute walk were you expecting.
  • Well, on line it said it was right across the street from Disneyland.
    • It is sir.
  • Well I didn't see any entrance gate or anything across the street.
    • Well, of course not sir. The entrance gates are located between the two parks, almost in the center of the block. Disneyland takes an entire block, and there is only one main entrance gate, the same gate that was built back in 1955. It hasn't moved. Things have just been built around it. There are no hotels across from the entrance gate, only a second theme park.
  • Fine, so you're telling me I have to walk?
    • I'm telling you that if you want the cheapest, fastest way to the entrance gate, walking is your best option.
  • But I don't want to walk.

These are just the tip of the iceburg folks. Am I the only one that finds these conversations entertaining, yet incredubly annoying at the same time?!
